DB Sport U12 Cup Final.

United win the Cup

Yes last Thursday evening saw Utd's U 12 squad lift the Cup after a slender win over neighbours Lismore.

We send our congratulations to Vinnie, John, Manus, Dierdre and the gang on reaching the Trophy Final in Limerick. The players did everyone proud during the week winning the Fair Play award for the week and Sean Og Kenneally winning the Player of the Day Award saw the week a huge success for our small League.

DB Sport U12 Cup result.

Lismore 0 Brideview Utd 1

This local derby produced plenty of good football with our boys coming home with the Cup after a tremendous victory.

The only goal of the game was scored by Gearoid Hynes in the opening half. Billy Murphy almost added goal number two when a cracking volley from 30 yards came crashing back off the crossbar and was cleared. Utd led 1-0 at the break.

The second half saw both sides creating chances but Shay Pratt was outstanding in goal. A great win boys so well done. Also Manager Liam Uli Ahern and his assistant Stephen Murphy.

Utd's squad: Shay Pratt, Aidan Murphy (Capt), Jack Henley, Darragh O Brien, Billy Murphy, Paul Henley, Ben Sheehan, David Henley, Alex Good, Joseph McDonnell, Sean Murphy, Isaac Almeida, Dean Cronin, Danny Power, Gearoid Hynes.

New Balance Kennedy Cup

Kick off next Tuesday

Yes how time flies and once again it's that time of the year when six hundred and twenty boys will make their way to the UL in Limerick for what will be a week they will never forget.

A time when scouts from most English and indeed Irish clubs will attend. Looking for the next Robbie Keane or indeed Roy Keane.

For our small League it's all about taking part. We will not win the Kennedy Cup but who knows what might happen in the trophy tournament. In this group one would meet with Leagues at our own level.

Finally we ish the Managers, players and supporters the best of luck and remember boys it's not all about winning, it's about taking part.

Player Development Workshop

The R.O.I. U 15 Head Coach Jason Donoghue will deliver a player development workshop on Thursday evening June 13th in UL. Coaches attending the Kennedy Cup need to confirm their attendance.

Runner Up spot for United

This result saw the homeside side clinch the League title and United finish runners up in what has been a terrific league especially between these two sides.

The homeside went in leading 1-0 at the break but Utd did not give up. A terrific goal from a free kick by Billy Murphy saw Utd back in the game. They tried hard for a winner which would have seen Utd win but it was not to be and we had to settle for runners up spot.

Utd’s squad all played.

Shay Pratt, Billy Murphy, Gearoid Hynes, Aidan Murphy, Danny Power, Ben Sheehan, Paul Henley, Dean Cronin, Sean Murphy, Joseph McDonnell, Jack Henley, Isaac Almeida.

Brideview Utd 2 Mogeely 1

Our U 12's had a home game on Sunday morning last against East Cork side Mogeely and at a sunny Leonard Fraser Park they secured all three points that put them joint League leaders with Cappoquin-Railway and just a couple of games left. It's all to play for and it's vital for United that we win all remaing games. Sunday morning last saw Joseph McDonnell and Ben Sheehan grab the goals. Sean Murphy set Ben up to score. Overall there was very little between both teams here and our boys just about deserved their victory.

Utd's squad all played: Alex Good, Sean Murphy, Billy Murphy, Aidan Murphy, Gearoid Hynes, Joseph McDonnell, Dean Cronin, Daniel Henley, Ben Sheehan, Jack Henley, Isaac Almeida.

Junior Hurling  First championship fixture is against Lismore in Ballyduff at 12pm on the 7th April.

Operation Transformation Walk: The numbers are slowly increasing by the week and with two weeks left feel free to come along. We commence at Pairc Éamonn De Paor Thursday at 7pm.

I stated a few weeks back that I was going to have a question and answer session with the outgoing chairman of the club Liam Mulcahy. Here is part one of the interview.

PRO: You have finished up four years as Tallow chairman, I remember when you first took over you

said you'd stay for one year. How are you feeling after the four years?

L.M.: One year was never a serious option. That’s what was mooted by the men who approached me at the time. Now I’m not that naive and neither were they. I remember John McDonnell saying to me at the time. “You’ll grow into and get to like it” He wasn’t too far out. Maybe I came to the position too late but sin sceal eile. I had some experience having served as chairman of Naomh Columcille in Tyrone and Cois Bhride but this was a whole different ball game. As the late Seamus Brennan once said “this is senior hurling boys”. The position brings a good deal of responsibility (the chairman is the final arbiter) but it is also a great privilege and honour to serve as Chairman of your club. Had I my time over I would have done some things differently. I would have ensured the role and responsibilities of each officer were clearly defined so there would be no confusion as to who should or should not be doing what. The GAA provides guidance in this regard. Every GAA club now has at least 10 different officer positions with new regulations issued weekly. Governance of clubs has changed dramatically. It’s now like running a business with the adherence to regulations and laws which that entails.

PRO: Many challenge face the modern day GAA club what are they biggest obstacles facing clubs now?

LM: I’ve outlined some of the admin difficulties above. It’s like every club would need a solicitor, accountant and social worker on the committee. From a playing perspective the main obstacles haven’t gone away. Continuity and certainty of fixtures was and is the main issue. This is nothing short of a plague on clubs. It has ever been thus! Lads are now skipping off to the US or even Australia during the championship break. This is going to become worse. You remember Fada when I was campaigning on the club notes for reform of fixtures. That’s over 20 years ago!!! They will kill clubs unless this is recognized and then the show is over. Another problem facing rural clubs especially is the lack of numbers. Not a lot can be done about this. In fairness to most clubs they are making every effort to keep young lads involved. Clubs are also reluctantly (understandably) facing up to the reality and amalgamating where necessary.

PRO: With the new Walsh Park in the offering and with the financial cost of such a venture what do you expect to follow?

LM: Disharmony and more club levies! Look this is a source of constant debate among and even embarrassment to Waterford Gaels. Maybe we missed the boat on this one. The ideal solution back in the day (maybe even still) was to build a compact (25,000) seater stadium in Carriganore. I understand there are issues about the GAA not developing lands which are not vested in the Association. Now it looks like a half hearted development to Walsh Park has been sanctioned which may be “ outdated and not fit for purpose before its even finished” Fraher Field has been promoted as another option. Not really sure but the course appears to be set. It’s a mess!! No offence to the wee county but Louth was usually tagged as the worst county ground in Ireland. They have ambitious plans to redevelop apparently. Let’s hope we don’t assume the mantle.

AGM

A well attended meeting chaired by the last time by out going chairman Liam Mulcahy was held in the clubhouse on Friday last. He lamented the loss of our late Patron Father Farrell and our club member and life and soul of any meeting the late Finn McCarthy. The highlight of the playing year was Cois bhride under twenty one football county victory. On an adult level the senior team had  a inconsistent year and the junior hurlers had two very good wins and came unstuck in the Western semi final. Our financial situation was stable and he thanked John O'Sullivan our lotto co-ordinator  and David O'Brien head of Deise draw for their contributions. We are indebted to any promoters for selling any tickets and all those your purchase tickets throughout the year . Clubs cannot function with the generosity of the people.

It was wonderful to see Tom Doyle in attendance after his hardship of the previous year.

Terence McSweeney takes over the chair of chairman from Liam Mulcahy after his four year tenure. Liam himself has said 'that the club needs an injection of youth". Such youthful endeavour brings with it new ideas, energy, exuberance and freshness. I would safely say that Ter possesses all these and more . His relentless pursuit of the  principles of what we expect of our club is what I look forward to in the coming years.

I will do an interview with Liam in the coming weeks discussing his chairmanship and others aspects of his reign over the last four years..

The election of officers were as follows.

President :Eddie Cunningham.

Vice Presidents: Canon Seán Cotter, Michael Prendergast, Sean Twomey, Dinny Cunningham, Connie Henley, John Lyons, Johnny Curley, Tom McSweeney.

Chairman: Terence McSweeney     Secretary : Lindsay Murphy   Treasurer : Mairead Sheehan

PRO: David O'Brien     Lotto Secretary & Co-Ordinator : John O'Sullivan

Registrar Lindsay Murphy    Deise Draw David O'Brien   Membership Officer : Billie-Jean Sheehan

Health & Wellbeing Officer : Veronica Henley     Child Welfare Officer : Kate Ryan

Insurance Officer : Terence McSweeney   Irish Officer : Seán Twomey

Club Representative : Timmy Sheehan & Denis Tobin

Chief Medical Officer Georgina Cunningham.

Senior Hurling : Coach Denis Walsh, Selectors Jimmy Cronin and Paul Kearney.

Junior Hurling : Manager Terence McSweeney, Selectors : Stuart Barry, Luke McCarthy and Seán Slattery.

Junior Football : Manager Stephen Pratt, Selectors : Dinny Tobin and Seán Gleeson.

Community Council Awards : The inaugural Community Council Awards took place on Saturday last in the community centre. A crowd of over three hundred packed the hall. An abundance of untold and unknown work was done in the vicinity  in the last year. It was great to see that recognized and all those in the numerous fields they  represented on the night . A resounding success, it's a tribute to those that organized the event and all those who took part.

Operation Transformation Lights Up: The GAA, in partnership with RTÉ’s Operation Transformation, is seeking to bring together communities across the 32 counties to enjoy healthy walks in the safe, bright, environs of their GAA club.

We have been asked if Tallow GAA is participating in the "GAA Lights Up Event" on every Thursday. The club does not have a designated walk way around the pitches but walks can still be organised once the walk starts and end at the clubhouse every Thursday between 7 and 9 for the next six weeks. However to be covered for insurance we need at least two leaders. One to walk at the front and the other at the back of the group. All walkers must record their names before the walk. If anyone is interested contact Terence ASAP and we can get started.

Anti Social Behaviour : It is a sad state of affairs that each night our club grounds are locked up to prevent damage being inflicted on them and to stop underage drinking. To make matters worse a litany of debris of cans and bottles are left in the facility. The gardaí have been contact and it is noted that such conduct will not be tolerated .

National Draw
Tickets are now available from the club for the National Club Draw. It's country wide. Tickets are €10. All funds raised will be retained by the club and so all ticket purchases would be greatly appreciated. Please contact Kate Ryan to avail of any purchase.

Last Man Standing: Commence's on the 2nd of February again under the guideship of Kieran Geary and Ter McSweeney. All the senior squad should have a booklet so please avail of the opportunity .

To Follow : I have a few plans for interviews on clubmen in the past and present on various matches and events that were of historical value to the club .

Congratulations to Ballygunner on their victory over Na Piarsaigh in the Munster club senior hurling final on Sunday last.

Scoil Mhuire

Well done to the boys and girls of Scoil Mhuire, Tallow, who won their county football finals on Thursday last.

Cois Bhride    0 - 11    St Patricks   1 - 8

Our minors played out a draw in the county final played in Fraher Field last Saturday . A very strong wind blowing in from the river made for difficult conditions for hurling . Playing with the wind in the first half scores were hard to come by but our lads stuck to the task and with 25 minutes played we led 8 points to 2 with all our scores coming from play . But three minutes later we conceded that all important goal and in the same play we lost our center back Sean Henley through injury . We led at the half time 8 points to 1 - 3.

We now had a big mountain to climb leading by only 2 and playing against the wind . But this team all year has shown fantastic character and they did it again in this second half . We scored the first two points to stretch the lead to 4 . This may not have been a classic game of hurling but boy was it exciting . Our backs now played to their limit and St Pats were relying on frees to keep them in the game and had us back to a point with 40 minutes on the clock . We were 2 up with two mins to go but two late points for Pats had the final score level and the two teams will have to do it all again .

Our lads can be very proud of this performance and hopefully up their game again in the replay . We led all the way in this match and only conceded 1 point from play in the second half against the wind so a lot of positives to give us the confidence to go and win this replay .Best of luck to all involved .

Minor hurling semi final :Cois Bhride  1 - 16   Clonea   0 - 14

Our minor hurlers traveled to Fraher field last Saturday to take on Clonea in the County B minor hurling semi final. Having played great hurling in the quarter final win there was a bit of pressure on the lads to play to that standard again and they did just that. The platform for this win was built in the first half. Playing against the wind the boys got off to a fast start and only after 5 mins led by  1 - 3 to no score. From here to half time they battled for every ball like their lives depended on it. They played some fantastic hurling here and at half time we led by 1 - 10  to  0 - 9 all our scores coming from play .

We knew Clonea were a very good team and that they would come at us with all guns blazing at the start of the second half. This they did and by the 45th minute they had us pulled back to a single point 1 - 12 to 14 points .But all credit to our players they raised their game again and in the last quarter outscored their opponents 4 points to nil. This was a mighty result for this panel of players and to all involved and they truly deserve to play in a big day that is a county final and I wish them the very best of luck.

Team ; Cathal Hunt , William Cunningham , Eoin Lenehan , Ivan O Neill , Sean Henley . Liam Motherway 0-1 . Eoin McGrath 0-4 . Tom Dalton , Ciaran McCarthy , Kieran Crawford 0-1 , Ben Ahearne , Mark Dalton 1-2 , Mark Stuart 0-5 , Padraig Hynes 0-3 , Jake Chambers , Cian Hurley , Michael Condon .

Playing with the wind in the first half we settled early and the first 15 minutes were closely contested and the scores stood at 5 points apiece. Our boys then took control and we led at half time 15 points to 8. It was the next quarter that our lads played some fantastic hurling and we increased our lead to 1 - 19 to 10 points, the goal coming from Ben Aherne in the 44th minute. Passage, to their credit didn't give up and pushed us all the way but we came out deserving winners in the end.

Team: Cathal Hunt, William Cunningham, Dean Beecher, Eoin Lenehan, Ivan O Neill, Sean Henley, Liam Motherway 0-1, Eoin McGrath0-1, Tom Dalton 0-3, Ciaran McCarthy 0-1, Kieran Crawford 0-2, Ben Ahearne 1-0,Padraig Hynes, Mark Stuart 0-3, Mark Dalton 0-11, Ciaran Hunt Jake Chambers.

Cois Bhride    1 - 20      Portlaw/Ballyduff Lower   0 - 11
This was a playoff round to reach the quarter finals. Played in Tallow last Saturday evening in cool conditions and no run on the ground. We started brightly and with only 2 mins on the clock Ben Ahearne had the ball in the Portlaw net with a brilliant strike. But from here to halftime scores were very slow in the making and we led at the break 1 - 5 to 0 - 3. Portlaw scored two early points at the start of the second half but our lads settled and by 45 mins we still had our 5 point lead. In the last quarter the boys pulled away outscoring the opposition 11 points to 4 to run out easy winners.

Team; Cathal Hunt ,William Cunningham ,Dean Beecher ,Eoin Lenehan ,Ivan O Neill ,Sean Henley 0-1 ,Liam Motherway ,Ciaran McCarthy 0-2 ,Tom Dalton ,Ben Ahearne 1-2 ,Mark Stuart 0-1 ,Kieran Crawford 0-1 ,Padraig Hynes 0-3 ,Ciaran Hunt ,Mark Dalton 0-10 ,Cian Hurley ,Jake Chambers.

We now play Passage in Passage next Saturday 29th September at 4pm

The under 21 footballers lost by a point to Tramore in Portlaw. It was a bruising encounter in which we lost our discipline. Ray 'Pigeon' O'Brien was dismissed I'm told in the wrong in the first half but the referee could have sent off anyone. Tallow beat a Tomás Maher lead Erins Own the following week without the suspended 'Pigeon' in a much more disciplined display. Looking at the team picture of the panel that are there and if Ray O'Brien had been included we would  have had  an astonishing nine players who went on the play senior hurling for Waterford.

12 September 2018  under 13 hurling   cois bhride v st pats  6.30

Minor hurling Western division.

Round 3    Cois Bhride 0 - 15     St Patricks 1 - 14
Last Wednesday week we travelled to Colligan and got off to a fast start playing some great hurling we led 9 points to 3 after 20 mins . St Pats hit us for a goal just before half time but we still led by 2 points . The second half was a different story and we struggled somewhat and the hurling we had in the first half just wasn't there in the second half and could only manage 5 points .Scorers Mark Dalton 0-6,Mark Stuart 0-3,Padraig Hynes 0-3,Kieran Crawford 0-2,Ben Ahearne 0-1.

Round 4    Cois Bhride  2 - 16      An Ghaeltacht  2 - 18
Sunday morning, September 2nd, we played the last round of the league section and this was a great game against a strong Ring side . Playing with the help of a slight breeze in the first half it took us a bit of time to get into the pace of the game .While Ring scored 7 of their first 8 points from play we needed Mark Dalton to be on fire with his free taking scoring 6 and 8 points in total in the first half. We got a great boost just before the break when Sean Henley crossed mid field and his shot ended up in the Ring net.We led by 4 points 1-11 to 0-10. Ring started the second half well and with the help of a well taken goal were on level terms within 10 mins. The next 10 mins belonged to us and our lads gave it everything .When Mark Stuart goaled it put us 5 points ahead . Unfortunately for us Ring hit us with a goal a min later and finished the stronger scoring 5 points to our 1.

Even though we lost both games there was nothing between the teams and our display on Sunday was very good throughout the 60 mins.

Scorers Mark Dalton 0-11,Mark Stuart 1-2,Padraig Hynes 0-2,Sean Henley 1-0,Eoin McGrath 0-1.

Having won our second round game against St Olivers with a score of 1 - 22 to 1 - 16 and unfortunately having to concede to Brickeys in the first round because  we couldn't field 15 players .We now enter the knockout stages of the competition but our opponents at time of writing are not known but will be an eastern team .

Panel used in all matches ; Kieran Crawford , Mark Stuart , Liam Motherway , Ben Ahearne , Eoin McGrath , Ciaran Hunt , Ivan O Neill , Sean Henley , Dean Beecher , William Cunningham , Ciaran McCarthy , Padraig Hynes , Eoghan Lenehan , Mark Dalton , Tom Dalton , Cian Hurley , Jake Chambers , Diarmuid Costello .

Senior Hurling

Tallow v Abbeyside

Last Saturday was a disappointing end to the senior hurling year when they were comprehensively beaten by Abbeyside in Fraher Field. Abbeyside certainly started the better of the two teams getting four points before Tallow responded. They also had numerous goal chances during this first half and only for the superb goal keeping of Shaun O Sullivan Tallow could have been down a lot more going in at half time. Half time score Tallow 0-4 Abbeyside 2-13. Going in at half time the writing was on the wall and it was pretty evident that there was no coming back from this. The second half was a similar story with Abbeyside running out eventual winners on a scoreline of 2-22 to 0-10.It just wasn't to be and the better team won on the day! We wish to thank the management team for their work and dedication throughout the year and we look forward to 2019.

Tallow: S O' Sullivan, M O' Brien, D O' Brien, K Kearney, J Henley, R Geary, R Beecher, D Mulcahy, K Geary, T Ryan, I Beecher, J Neville, R Grey, E Sheehan, D Buckley

Subs: J Murray, T Daly, B McCarthy, M Tobin, M Stewart

Scorers for Tallow: T Ryan (0-4 3fs) K Geary (0-2) D Buckley (0-2 1f) R Grey & T Daly (0-1 each)

Kick Off Draws Near
The kick off is now just 10 days away (it kicks off on Saturday 1st September) and the usual pressure is on clubs to get players signed and finding out what teams will be entering for the coming season.

Academies
The academy teams are easy enough and this season there will be some changes introduced. The main one is that theses academy games will be run in a blitz format as many clubs found that if they had other teams playing in different venues it was difficult to get coaches and managers to all venues. We will have more on this next week after the delegate meeting.

Terms for this Season
As well as the academy teams the club will have u12, u13, u14 and u16's. However it's not too clear yet if the league will run u15 or u16 leagues. Again a clearer picture after the clubs A.G.M.

Schoolboys A.G.M.
Will take place on tonight Wednesday 22nd August. Again this is very late but due to the season running so late people on holidays and eveyone anxious to take a break it is only going ahead now. We will have a report on this next week and the academies and teams will become clearer. Managers will also be announced next week so group texts will be in full flow next week no doubt.

First Into Action
Our u12 and u14 teams will be first into the action on Saturday 1st September.

Flashback In Time
A very interesting photo appeared in the above on the Dungarvan Leader of our u10 team taking part in the Morrissey Cup in a tournament run by Ballinroad AFC. Who can name the full squad I ask.

Leaving Results
Congratulations to all the boys and girls who did excellent in the Leaving Cert. We have a real brainy bunch in and around Tallow.

Senior Hurling Championship:
Our senior hurlers play neighbours Ballyduff in the senior hurling championship on Saturday night in Lismore. A lot at stake here so please come along and support the lads.

U21 Hurling (A) Championship – Western Semi Final
A pattern has developed at inter county level this year of teams overhauling big half time leads and taking the game into extra time. So it was in Ballysaggart on Thursday evening when Cois Bhride and Comeragh Gaels met in the u21 Hurling Western semi final.

This game looked done and dusted at half time. Cois Bhride cruised through the first half, picking off points at will, and led by 1-12 to 3 at the break. Ryan Grey alone must have converted about 8 of them.  Comeragh Gaels looked uninterested and disjointed. They allowed the Tallow/Shamrock combination acres of space and the Bridesiders took full advantage.

Maybe our lads got complacent but it was a different story in the second half.  The mid western alliance tightened up the marking and crowed the middle third denying Cois Bhride the space they enjoyed in the first half. They were far more cohesive and relentlessly whittled away at the lead. At the sounding of the final whistle, it was Cois Bhride who were hanging on as the game finished level (1-21 to 2-18).

There was some confusion before the game went into extra time. The momentum was with Gael na Comeraigh and they looked like they could finish the job. Both teams were out on their feet at this stage. Cois Bhride however regained their composure and finished the stronger after over 80 minutes of hurling to scrape through by the minimum. (1-29 to 3-22).  This should be the showpiece of developing talent in Waterford hurling but strangely enough its a grade that’s neglected.

Buiochas:
Our sincere thanks to Tim Keniry and Centra who sponsored food and refreshments for over 150 children at the CUL camp as well as supplying breakfast for our senior squad last Sunday. Much appreciated Tim! Thank you for your continued support.

Summer Camp in full swing

The weather was cooler this week which suited the coaches and the kids. we had over sixty kids on Monday but we had five more joining on Tuesday morning as many of these were just back from holidays, lucky kids.

We had a good number of girls at the camp and many of these put their names forward for next year. There is a story there no doubt.

We will have more on this in the notes next week as well as some sponsorship from Centra. Watch this space as they say.

Birthday Greetings

To our Club Chairman Michael Curley who celebrated his birthday on Monday last. The gathering on Saturday was a huge success. Sorry I could not make it but Dublin called. Anyway his buddy told me I would not have stayed up with them as I am getting on in years. The cheek of him Ha!!!

Then we had one of our Premier players Kieran Geary also celebrating his birthday on Monday. Finally how could I forget Donna Buckley who celebrated her birthday on Monday. Now their ages I hear you ask? It goes like this, Kieran, Michael and Donna. The youngest being Kieran.

Hope everyone had a great day and here's to many more from all in Brideview.

Getting ready for Lip Sync
It's getting nearer to the big night of the Lip Sync Battle in Lizzy Langtons. It takes place on Sunday June 3rd. Now who is in it? I hear you ask. Well its a guessing game at the moment. We have girls and yes boys. There is talk that Abba could be making an appearance. Someone else said that The Last of the Summer Wine are in the frame also. The Geardie man is a non runner but I understant that there are two boy bands on stage that night. Now I hear that there is also a girl group taking part. Is hipster taking to the stage I wonder. He was seen doing some moves last week in the soccer field. Alot of movement with his knees I think. Some girls and boys on their own? We might have more news before the big night. Watch out for our facebook page. Is Soles and Heels going to be in action. He was seen moving in the ramp boreen or was it The Lotto Boys. It should be a good night especially with the guests doing their bit.

Well Done
To Stephan Murphy who was on the squad of our U12 Inter league team that took on Athlone in The All Ireland Plate Final in Mullingar. Our league lost 2-0 on the day but it was a terrific weekend for our boys and managers. Not forgetting the large group of parents, grandparents and supporters who made the long trip.

Congratulations
To all the local boys and girls who made their First Holy Communion on Saturday last. The day was fine and sunny which was a big help to everyone.

Sympathy
The club extends its deepest sympathy to The McCarthy family (Moanfune) on the sad passing of Finn. Finn's tractor was always available to our club. If it could not be done today then it was done the following day. Thanks for the memories Finn and rest in peace.

Leonard Fraser Cup Final (U17)

Finale in Tallow

The finale of the Leonard Fraser Cup takes place on this coming Thursday evening when Brideview will face Cappoquin. This should be a real cracker with very little separating the sides.

Home advantage one would feel should favour United but the visitors have played many times in Leonard Fraser Park.

Hopefully the weather will be fine and that should bring out the fans for what should be a thrilling game. We wish the boys the very best of luck on Thursday and we appeal to our fans to turn out and support the lads.

U10 Academy:

Our U10 academy travelled to Ardmore on Saturday last and enjoyed the match. Scorers for United were Ryan Whelan (3), Isaac Almeida (1), Ben Sheehan (4), Michael Murphy (1) and Adam Pratt (1).

All the United Squad played; Tadhg McCormack, Adam Pratt, Daniel Henley, Lukasz Madez, Geordan Murphy, Ryan Whelan, Michael Murphy, Sean Mangan, Ben Sheehan, Isaac Almeida.

Congratulations

Leonard Fraser Cup Semi Final second leg (U17)

Terrific Fight Back by United
What a game we had in Tallow on Saturday afternoon. Down 3-2 from the first leg Utd went further behind inside the opening two minutes but the boys staged a remarkable comeback to reach the final against all the odds.
Our U9 acdemy were in action agains Mogeely on Saturday morning.

Results: Leonard Fraser Cup Semi Final, Brideview Utd 4, Lismore 1 (Agg 6-4).

This local derby produced an unexpected result as Utd had to field withour four first team players added to the fact that we were already 3-2 down from the first leg. Then with just two minutes gone Lismore struck what looked like to be the killer blow for Utd. The game continued with the visitors on top and they did miss some good chances.
Then after 31 minutes Kieran Crawford grabbed an equiliser for Utd and a few minutes later Stewart tested the Lismore keeper who got down well to bring off a marvellous save. At the break the sides went in level at 1-1.
It turned the game for Utd. Crawford was in again in the 61st minute to increase Utds lead. To be fare the visitors did fight back but Utds keeper Beecher and his back four of Cunningham, Chambers, Hurley and Scotton kept the visitors at bay. As the game entered added time Crawford was upended in the visitors box. Crawford himself took the penalty and gave the keeper no chance. So Crawford grabbed himself a hat trick which was well deserved. In midfield Lenehan, Captain Aherne, Stewart and Sheehan ran themselves into the ground so to speak. Almedia also played well throughout helping out his defence. All in all a terrific game of football from a bunch of boys who fought back in true Utd fashion. Wel ldone lads.

Utd: D. Beecher, W. Cunningham, E. Scotton, J. Chambers, C. Hurley, E. Lenehan, B. Aherne, M. Stewart, J. Sheehan, K. Crawford,
J. Almeida.

The Final
The final will take place in Tallow on what could be the bank holiday weekend.

Games Transferred
Will it ever end, I'm talking about the weather of course.  We have just one game over the weekend.  That was our U11 academy who played in Cappoquin all weather pitch.

The Subway Inter League games transferred from Tallow to Ardmore as no pitch in this area was playable.  Yes Ardmore's pitch was in great nick and all games took place without any problem.

 U11 Academy

We played Cappoquin on their all weather pitch and our lads were delighted just to get a game.  Our scores here were Dean Cronin and that Liverpool fan Aidan Murphy. Utds squad: Alex Good, Jack Henley, Shay Pratt, Sean Murphy, Billy Murphy, Aidan Murphy, Danny Power, Bryan Miguel, Gearoid Hynes, Joseph McDonnell, Dean Cronin.

Thanks

To the parents who travelled to Cappoquin with the lads.

Well Done

To Stephan Murphy who was on the U12 W.W.E.C. squad who defeated Limerick County in Ardmore. Stephan was also on the team that won the Manchester Cup. A busy young man is Stephan.

Confirmation Day

This Wednesday will see the boys and girls making their Confirmation. We hope the day will be fine and that everyone will have a good time. Brendie got a haircut but I'm not sure if he got a shave.

Sympathy

The club extends its deepest sympathy to the Oakham family Lismore on the sad passing of Sheila. May she rest in peace. Sympathy also to The Wheeler family Kilwort on the sad passing of Margaret. May she rest in peace.

Busy Weekend In Tallow.
It was a mixture of games on and games off last weekend. Our U16 Cup semi-final was off on Saturday and will now take place on Saturday week or it may take place during the week. Players will be notified. Our U8 academy did not take place but our U10 team were in action on Saturday and our U13's were in action on Monday. Next Saturday our U17 team are in action in the second leg of the semi-final. On Sunday the club hosts The Subway Inter league quarter finals at U12 & U13 age groups. Our U13 game on Bank holiday Monday was off due to the heavy rain on Sunday and Monday . Again these games add to the already hugh back log of games. When will we finish I ask as we run into April. Next week we are down to play games at U9, U11 & U13's. Lets hope they go ahead. Our U10 academy game was the only game to take place last weekend and again our lads were delighted to get a game.

U10 Academy:
Our U10 academy team travelled to Castlelyons on Saturday last. The lads enjoyed the game and all the players got game time which is important.
Scores for Utd here were Ryan Whelan (3), Isaac Almeida (2), and Tadhg Mc Cormack (1).
Utds Squad: Darragh O'Brien, Isaac Almeida, Ben Sheehan, Sean Mangan, Adam Pratt, Geordan Murphy, Ryan Whelan, Tadhg Mc Cormack, Daniel Henley and Michael Murphy.

Thanks
To the parents who brought the boys to Castlelyons.

Congratulations
To Stephan Muarphy who was on the W.W.E.C. team which won the Manchester Cup. We have yet to get all the details but I think Stephen scored one in the penalty shootout. Again full details next week.

Birthday Greetings
A belated happy Birthday to Ann O'Keeffe. Isabelle O'Brien had a great party with a large group of girls and boys last week. Ann Tobin and Patricia Condon both celebrated their birthday last weekend. Their ages ah Im not going to tell but I could. The blond in The Enterprise Centre also celebrated a very important birthday last weekend. Now Aislings age. Well its between 35 and 45. Have a guess. Brideview United AFC Schoolboy/girl League Notes

Lismore Too Strong for Utd
Our young U16 team went down to neighbours Lismore on Saturday afternoon. We have just one league game left here and again it's a home game against Inch. Our U12 and U14 teams are in action this commig Saturday.

Result: East Cork Oil Aglish Branch U16 League
Brideview Utd 1, Lismore 5

It was a young United side that took on neighbours Lismore on Saturday last. Lismore opened the scoring in the 15th min and added two more before Utd got off the mark. Lismore's third goal was from the penalty spot in the 39th min. Utd were awarded a penalty 2 minutes later when Eoin Lenehan was brought down and Mark Dalton who made no mistake from the spot kick. Lismore led 3-1 at the break. The visitors added two more goals in the second half to run out convincing winners. We were short some regulars here due to injuries and illness and because of this we fielded many of our U13 squad. So well done lads.

Utds squad all played: T.Dalton, S.Roche, C.Hurley, E.Costello, J.Sheehan, E.Lenenhan, P.Hynes, J.Chambers, M.Dalton, A.O'Dowd, J.O'Brien, E.Scotton.

No Games for United
Yes both our U13's and U16 games were called off on Saturday due to the heavy rain that fell on Friday and into Saturday morning.
The Subway Inter League U12 game versus West Cork went ahead in Ardmore. The Ardmore pitch was in excellent order thanks to Dec Barron.
Hopefully the weather will pick up and that we can get games played this comming Saturday. We have two teams in action namely U12 Premier and U14 1st Division. Both teams are away.

Congratulations
Yes this week we congradulate one of our Premier players namely Kevin Henley who got engaged over the Christmas holidays to Sharon Maloney. Sharon told me Kevin got down on both knees. This couple are very popular in the club and we have no doubt Kevin is in good hands. Right Sharon. Another wag gone. Ha! Ha!

Ball Boys
While the Airtricity League of Ireland has not yet kicked off we are sorted for ball boys on Friday 6th July in The RSC. The Blues take on Bohs on the night. We will have more on this later.

Convent St. Boys.
Mostly the last of the summer wine Convent St boys were out early in The Corner House on Saturday night last. Nowadays they are only able for the couple of pints. So they were all home early and tucked up. Ha! Ha! The boy from Youghal was delighted as he shook hands with them all.
Not forgetting John Russell, that very good presenter on Youghal community Radio. John from Chapel St. was looking for a story around the Rep. of Ireland managers job. He thought one of the boys might have something to say. He did.

Brideview are Champions
Our U17 team won the O'Rourke family U17 league on the Saturday before Christmas.  Our U16 team suffered at 3-2 defeat to Inch in the East Cork Oil U16 league.  Or U16 game versus Lismore fell foul to the weather.

The O'Rourke Family U17 League
Six goal thriller in Tallow
Brideview Utd. 3 Lismore 3

A six goal thriller, a point a piece but the result was good enough for our boys to clinch the league title.
Eoin McGrath was Uts' hero here scoring all three goals.  The first came after 9 minutes when a mistake in Lismores defence saw McGrath pounce and shoot home.  Paudie Hynes and Mark Dalton went close to increasing Utds lead.
Lismore got back on lefvel terms in the 24th minute; Jake Chambers was denied by Lismore's keeper.  The visitors took the lead in the 31st minute but Utd, got back on level terms when McGrath found the net from a free kick.  It was now 2-2 and a real cracker of a game.
Again the visitors restored their one goal advantage after 42mins and they held this lead at the break.
The second half saw the game swing end to end.  Tom Dalton brought off a terrific save in the 49th minute.  A penalty to Utd in the 51st minute saw McGrath grab his hat trick and both sides went looking for the winner.

The years have slipped by so quickly! Its 25 years since our hurlers won the U21 All Ireland in '92 and last week-end the panel, which included our own Mark Geary and Colin Cunningham, had a reunion in Dungarvan. These lads gave us some great enjoyment in the years that followed also. Thanks for the memories boys.

Utd Go Back On Top
Brideview Utd had a very busy weekend with three teams in action on Saturday and all three teams winning. Our U17 team moved back on top of the U17 league when they defeated neighvours Valley Rangers. Utd also defeated Rangers U13 team while our  U11 team had a home game against Castlebridge Celtic.

Results: U17 League Sponsored By The O'Rourke Family
Brideview Utd 7 Valley Rangers 3

No shortage of goals in Leonard Fraser Park on Sunday last in this local derby. Ben Aherne tested Ranger keeper after only 2 minutes and 5 minutes later Utd took the lead with Mc Grath shooting home from close range. It was short lived however asRangers grabbed the equaliser just 2 minutes later. Josh Sheehan went close in the 12th minutes but the visiting keeper got down well to save. Aherne restored Utds lead after 15 minutes and Mark Dalton made it 3-1 to Utd when he scored in the 44th minute. This was the score at the break.
The second half saw more goals. Crawford set up Mc Grath to increase Utd's lead in the 58th minute. Crawford himself shot over from close range in the 60th minute. Valley pulled a goal back in the 71st minute.
Mark Dalton grabbed his second after 76 minutes and Aherne was back in again after 83 minutes. Balley again reduced the scoreline to 6-3 in the 85th minute before Paudie Hynes rounded off the scoring in the 88th minute. A victory which puts Utd back on top of the league table.

Utd's Squad all played: T Dalton, P Hynes, W Cunningham, D Beecher, J Chambers, E Lenehan, K Crawford, B Aherne, J Sheehan, M Dalton, E Mc Grath, J Almeida, C Hurley.

U13 League Sponsored By Amber Oil/Hillbilly's Service Station Fermoy.

Utds squad: A Good, J Henley, J Martin, J Good, C Henley, T Twohig, A Hurley, W Kenneally, C Bowes, C Mc Carthy, C Lenehan, A Cantwell,

The club extends its deepest sympathy to The O'Connor Family of Blackpool Curraglass on the sad passing of Declan. Declan was a keen Spurs fan and his son Shane played for many years for Brideview. Sympathy also to The Ahern Family Convent St on the sad passing of Eily. May she rest in peace.

Big game on Thursday

This coming Thursday will see Utd's U12 team in action in the DB Sport sponsored Cup Final against neighbours Lismore. Our lads got a tough game in the semi-final from Ardmore running out winners 3-1 at the end of a very exciting and tough game.

Utd will need to be in top form against neighbours Lismore. It's a big Utd panel and Manager Liam "   " Ahern and his assistant Stephen Murphy will have a tough job picking the starting line up.

The following is the full panel.

Shay Pratt, Aidan Murphy (Capt), Billy Murphy, Darragh O' Brien, Ben Sheehan, Daniel Henley, Joseph McDonnell, Danny Power, Gearoid Hynes, Jack Henley, Dean Cronin, Sean Murphy, Alex Good,Paul Henley, Isaac Almeida. We wish the boys the best of luck and if you can turn up and support the boys.

Well done Mick.

Yes Republic of Ireland Manager Mick McCarthy whose father Charlie was born in Tallow is getting his players to perform and ground out results. It was not easy against Denmark in Copenhagen, especially in the second half.

No doubt Mick will have brought in some new players against Gibraltar On Monday night last. Could we see Doherty and O'Dowda back in the starting line up. Let's hope for a victory here and keep us on top of the table.

DB Sports U14 Cup

Heavy defeat for United.

Our U14 Cup game against Cappoquin/Railway saw our lads go down to a heavy defeat. It now looks like our Academy games will take place in Leonard Fraser Park on the last two Saturdays of the month.

Our season is now coming to an end and no doubt many managers will say thanks be to God as it's been a very long season. No doubt the League committee will be working hard during the closed season to sort out the fixtures.

Result DB Sports U14 Cup

Brideview Utd 1 Cappoquin/Railway 6

The visitors had this game wrapped up at the break as they led 4-0. They piled on the pressure in the second half and ran out easy winners. Our scorer here in the second half was Alan Hurley.

Utd. squad all played: Alex Good, Taylor Twohig, Alan Hurley, Ian Martin, Ciaran Lenehan, Josh Good, Alex Bennett, Callum McCarthy, Jack McDonnell, Luca Tobin, Stephen Murphy, Danny Power, Aidan Murphy, Argana Cantwell.

Academy Days

The Academy final days were never as late. The 8-10 year olds Academy day goes ahead on Saturday 22nd June while the following Saturday will see the U7,U9 and U11 taking place in Tallow.

Sympathy

The Club extends its deepest sympathy to the Moroney family Chapel Street on the sad passing of Joe. Joe I believe was the oldest person in Tallow. May he rest in peace.

Lip Sync.

Another good night in Lizzy Langtons for what is now becoming a great night of entertainment for the locals. Many local groups and individuals performrd on the night. The winners, if there is such a thing, was that famous James Clancy and J.P. Kellegher. Well done lads and indeed to all who took part. We will have more on this in the coming months.

Cup Final

Our U12 team have a Cup Final against Lismore and this looks likely to take place on Thursday 14th June.

Girls Camoige: Maith sibhse do chailíní Scoil Mhuire Tallow ar a mbua i gcluiche ceannais an chontae.

Junior Football : Tallow 3-07  Old Parish 1-10.

We recorded our first victory in the Junior football championship in Ardmore on Friday last.  Eoin Condon operating in the Kieran Donaghy mould scored 1-1 in the first half and set up Darragh Mulcahy for his goal. Kieran Geary having a very profitable first half along with the workmanlike Bob McCarthy had to retire at half time with a leg injury. His lose was felt in the second in which Darah Buckley struck a beauty to the roof of the net. The platform of our win was mainly down to the very solid half back line. Kieran covered well for his two energizer bunnies beside him in which Kevin Henley and Darragh Mulcahy excelled. We faded at the end but the first victory of our campaign would have pleased the management.

Team: Mikey Curley, Alan Curley, Jack Tobin, Robbie Geary, Kevin Henley, Kieran Fraser, Darah Mulcahy , Kieran Geary , Bob McCarthy, Tommy Daly, Ryan Grey, Shaun O'Sullivan, Darragh Buckley, Eoin Condon, Donnacha Mulcahy, Subs used Mark O'Brien,Ian Beecher, Eric Hickey, Mikey Tobin, Rob O'Sullivan.

Waterford v Limerick : A win here would generate a momentum that could qualify us for the quarter final. The All Ireland champions are surely hurt by their below par performance against Cork but what of Waterford? A lot was made of the home advantage of Walsh park, they need to garner that and make it a fortress and show lifeness in that a team  collective will be enough to over power the Treaty men. We wish Tommy, Jordan and James the best of luck in their pursuit of a win.

United into Semi Final

We had two teams in action last week. Our U12 team advanced to the Cup semi final and our U11 Academy team were also in action.

Results: DB Sports U 12 Cup

Brideview Utd 2 Valley Rangers 0

A great game of football here between these two local teams. Utd took the lead early in the first half when Danny Power scored a great goal. Joseph McDonnell added goal number two when he chipped the keeper . Utd led 2-0 at the break.

The second half saw both sides create some chances but we saw no more goals. So Utd advance to the Cup semi final. Well done lads.

U11 Academy

Our U11 Academy team played Ardmore in Leonard Fraser Park on Thursday night last. A great game between two sides that played plenty of good football.

Utd's scorers here were: Ben Sheehan (2), Tadgh McCormack (1) Adam Pratt (1) Isaac Almeida (1) Michael Murphy (1)

Utd's players all took part:Darragh O Brien, Sean Mangan, Daniel Henley, Isaac Almeida, Ben Sheehan, Michael Murphy, Adam Pratt, Tadgh McCormack, Lukasz Modei, Jordan Murphy.

Sympathy

The Club extends it's deepest sympathy to the Ryan Family Mount Fair on the sad passing of Teresa. May she rest in peace.

Sympathy also to the Tracy Family on the sad passing of Maggie. May she rest in peace.

Thanks boys and girls

Yes a big thank you to all the boys and girls who turned up for their march on to the field with both Junior teams before the Cup Final. The kids were treated to some goodies which they really enjoyed. They then played a game during the half time break.

So thanks to the parents, coaches and the boys and girls for adding to the final.

Well Done lads

After a terrific first half the game died a bit in the second half with both keepers seldom being tested. Extra time failed to see a winner. So it went down to a penalty shootout which the A team won. However we congratulate both teams for making it a great evening and doing both themselves and the Club proud.

Sponsors

Centra who are terrific sponsors of the Junior club left no stone unturned as both dressing rooms were well stocked up with water, Lucozade, fruit and Jaffa cakes which was much appreciated by both teams.

Two Teams in Semi Finals

Next weekend promises to be a hectic one for our Junior club. Both our A and B teams are involved in The Semi Finals of the Ned Barry cup. What are the odds on both teams reaching the final. It would be first ever for the club. Our A team were already through to the semi final but our B team won a thriller on Sunday morning last.

Result: Ned Barry Quarter Final, Kinsalebeg Celtic 1, Brideview Utd B 2.

Yes our B team advanced to the cup semi final after a hard fought victory away in Kinsalebeg. Ahearne was first into action for Utd after 11 minutes but he shot wide from close range. The opening goal came in the 14th minute when Mark Stewart beat the full back and gave a great through ball to Ahearne to shoot home. A David Kingston cross saw Stewarts volley come back off the post and was cleared. The homeside grabbed an equaliser in the 23rd minute and the sides went in level at the break 1-1, so it was all to play for in the second half. In the 48th min Andy O Riordan shot over the Utds keeper Walsh did well to keep Utd level when he saved well in the 51st min. Robbie O Sullivan set up Ahearne in the 71st minute but latter shot was saved well by Celtics keeper. With just 5 mimutes remaining and extra time looming. Utds captain Thomas McGrath sent in a great ball into Celtics penalty area and Andy O Riordan reacted first and shot to the net much to the delight of Utds players and supports. Utd held out for the final few minutes and reached the cup semi-final. So well done boys.

Utd : B Walsh, D. Kingston, G. Chambers, A.O Riordan, T. Mc Grath, D. Mulcahy, S. Pratt, R. Sullivan, M. Stewart, E. Forbes, B. Ahearne,
Reserves used G. Sheehan, D.Tobin.

The O'Rourke Family Youth League

McGrath the hero

Utd's last game in the O'Rourke Family Youth League saw them clinch all three points and go joint top of the League.

Our Junior A team face the winners of Valley Rangers and Lismore in The Barry Cup Semi Final and Utd and Utd's B team played their Quarter Final in Cappoquin on Monday night last. We said it last week could we yet have an all Utd Final

Result: Youth League

Brideview Utd 1 Cappoquin-Railway 0

A weakened visitors team should have seen Utd well on top here but it was not to be and it took a second half goal by Eoin McGrath to secure the points. Utd themselves were short some first team players here but players like Josh Sheehan, Shane Casey and Diarmuid Costello  all played their part in the victory as did Joas Almeida when introduced in the second half.

Utd must now wait for Cappoquin-Railway final game to Valley Rangers to see what happens. A win for Cappoquin-Railway will be enough to get them into a playoff with Utd.

Utd: E.Costello, W.Cunningham, J. Scotton, D.Beecher, D.Costello, K.Crawford, E.McGrath, J.Chambers, J.Sheehan, P.Hynes, S.Casey.

Man of the Match

Eolan Costello who brought off some terrific saves during the game.

Cois Bhride  1 - 16       St. Patricks  3 - 16
Last Saturday we traveled to Fraher Field to take on St Patricks in the Minor Hurling Division 2 final replay . Another cold windy evening played under lights both teams gave us another exciting game .  Playing with the breeze in the first half our lads had the upper hand but were unlucky to concede 2 goals and only led by 2 points at half time 0 - 9 to 2 - 1 .

Again playing against the wind in the second half we knew we would have to work hard . And yet again this team responded to that challenge . We conceded a goal and 4 points to our 1 point which left us trailing by 4 points heading into the last quarter . But with another mighty effort our lads leveled the match in the 63rd minute with a goal from Mark Dalton to leave the score  1 - 13 to 3 - 7  and send the game into extra time .

Unfortunately for our players the effort exerted in that last quarter took its toll on a lot of our lads and St Pats finished the game the stronger and we finally succumbed to a better team .

Our boys can feel very proud of themselves for a fantastic season in this grade . They started football in March reaching the semi final and beating the eventual county champions in the league section . And the hurling with those fantastic wins over the two best eastern teams in the quarter and semi and two big days in the final and replay . When you consider the age profile of this team and to think we were picking from a panel of 18 players they definitely punched above weight .

 Team ;  Cathal Hunt , Eoghan Lenehan , Dean Beecher (0-1) , William Cunningham , Liam Motherway (0-2) , Shaun Henley , Ivan O Neill (Capt) , Tom Dalton(0-1) , Eoin McGrath(0-1) , Ben Aherne , Kieran Crawford(0-1) ,Ciaran McCarthy , Padraig Hynes , Mark Stewart(0-1) , Mark Dalton(1-9) , Jake Chambers , Cian Hurley , Michael Condon .

And finally I would like to thank my fellow selectors Declan and Liam , coaches Tim Lenehan , Shane Roche and Shaun O Sullivan , Physio Thomas Goulding , the waterboys , jersey washers , parents who drove to the matches , Cois Bhride juvenile committee , sponsor  Mike O Neill , all our supporters and Mick and staff at Kearneys Restaurant for feeding the team after the two finals . Also a mention for Denis Tobin for having the field ready and available for matches and training .

Team ; Cathal Hunt ; Eoghan Lenehan ; Dean Beecher ; William Cunningham ; Ivan O Neill (capt) ; Sean Henley ; Liam Motherway : Tom Dalton ; Eoin McGrath 0-1 ; Kieran Crawford ; Ciaran McCarthy ; Ben Aherne 0-1 ; Padraig Hynes 0-2 ; Mark Stuart 0-2 ; Mark Dalton 0-5 ; Jake Chambers ; Cian Hurley : Michael Condon .

Tallow Tidy Towns

Tallow Tidy Towns

The tireless work undertaken by the Tidy Towns Committee has again paid dividends this year.  The adjudicators were impressed with the work undertaken to date on the Alms houses and many businesses and premises were commended for their continuing work to enhance their buildings.  The planting of containers both in the square and in the various green areas around the town drew praise from the adjudicators who said they are looking forward to seeing the further planned development of these areas next year.

A special word of thanks to all who volunteered to litter pick over the summer months. The absence of litter was noted and drew praise from the judges.

The residents of the various housing estates were commended for their work keeping their own areas clean and tidy, and for adding to the overall look of the area with colourful displays in baskets and window boxes.

While the Tidy Towns were delighted with the comments, there are still many ways in which Tallow can increase its scores in the Tidy Towns Competition.  Volunteers are always welcome as there are many projects which need constant attention.  There is always room for improvement and the Tidy Towns committee urge each and every resident in the town, and especially those living on the main thoroughfare, to  pay attention to the areas adjacent to their premises, pick up litter, weeds etc.  And together we can make Tallow a town to be proud of and to welcome visitors too in 2019.

A hurlers perspective on the modern game by David O Brien (Fada)
I watched the All Ireland hurling final a few weeks back and noticed two announcements by the commentator Marty Morrissey. On two occasions in the game Dara O'Donovan and Cian Lynch both pulled on the ball and  Marty declared on both occasions " It's great to see , why don't we see it more often?". So is ground hurling an obsolete skill in modern hurling?
In the current era of congested midfields, where space is at a premium and bringing the ball into contact is the norm, why aren’t more teams moving the ball quicker with the ground stroke? “Rucks” is a new  hurling term because they are so common and as a spectacle they are hideous to watch. Ground hurling could solve all this especially in the middle third area. A fast ground ball into the forwards would cut out all these defenders. Percentage play is a modern term for possession. Teams are afraid to hit a 50/50 ball for fear of losing it and affecting their stats.
The GAA's National Hurling Development manager Martin Fogarty said it's a worrying trend when you see a guy over six foot with a 33' or 34' hurley. They can't reach the ground and miss countless hooks and blocks because their hurley is too small for them. Nowadays a lot of teams have people who can hit sideline cuts as easily as a free. We have Jordan Henley , Mark O'Brien and Tommy Ryan who can launch sidelines on fifty yard trajorities. One of these has a smaller hurley that Martin Fogarty speaks of. The sideline is often the only ground stroke seen in a match so has it’s importance grown through the demise of the “pull”.
Our own Paul O'Brien scored a double on the ground pull goal against Tipperary in 2004 and we all basked in the glory that it was a  skill engrained in him by Ned Power. Evan Sheehan also scored a great ground stroke against Ballyduff in Lismore a few years back on the stroke of half time which ultimately proved the decisive score in a Senior Hurling championship match. Gone however are the days in training of a man in the middle doubling on the ball. Too many sliotars lost I’d imagine. Along with the sweet satisfaction a player gets when he connects just right and watches the ball fly over his teammates head into the ditch surrounding the pitch.
The other exponent missing is the pull on the ball in the air. It was everywhere before with half forwards pulling and either connecting on the ball or leaving it through. You'd rarely see it nowadays .The last time I saw it executed was when Shane Walsh pulled on the great ball against Cork in a Munster League game in Ballyduff back in 2011. As a far more difficult skill to master it is as good as any when executed correctly. Henry Shefflin connected with a ball against Cork in the All Ireland of 2004, Donal Og made a great save on it. It was Shefflin's connection that was so impressive and a skill set that had him in such high regard with his peers at the time. Tommy Guilfoyle scored two great goals against Tipperary in the Munster Championship of 1994 courtesy of the same skill.
Hurling has many facets and skills, and it's up to coaches or individuals to teach the game the way they like it to be played. The question to ponder though is whether these are skills that no longer have a place in the modern game or skills that are no longer coached?

New Arrival
Huge congrats to Aidan and Marie Kearney on the birth of a bouncing baby boy.

Senior Hurling Championship:

Tallow  3-22    Ballyduff 1-27  (aet)

From the opening half minute when Sully pulled off a point blank save to the dying moments of extra time when Tommy Daly fired over the winning point this was a pulsating, roller coaster of a game in Lismore on Saturday evening. What the game lacked in quality it certainly made up for in excitement and drama.

In the opening quarter, Ballyduff set the pace, scoring 6 points, mostly frees. Tallow conceded far too many frees overall (around 19 in total) and I suppose you can draw a few conclusions from this. Tallow replied with a point from Ryan Grey (the first of 6 from play he contributed in total) and a goal from Mark O Brien, to keep Ballyduff in check.  Mark’s goal came at the end of a surging solo run through the Ballyduff rearguard which somehow ended up in the net. Speechless! Ballyduff led by 0-6 to 1-1 after 15 minutes and were hurling well. Tallow never settled into any routine as the Village piled on the pressure to lead by 5 points at the break.

Ballyduff were again the more purposeful in the second half as they notched up the scores. Goals at crucial times kept Tallow in this game and Thomas Ryan netted our second as the full time whistle beckoned. I lost track of scorers as the game increased in intensity but Thomas Ryan had a final tally of 1-12 from frees and open play.  The score at the end of full time was Tallow 2-17 Ballyduff 1-20.  The game went into extra time.  Tallow’s third goal came from Jordan Henley. Ballyduff were undaunted and pushed on again. With around 5 minutes remaining in the second half of extra time they had accrued a three point lead. With some exceptions, Tallow had not hurled well and the game now looked beyond them. They showed remarkable resilience and character throughout and especially in the last 5 minutes. They kept their heads and nailed on 4 points to scrape through to the quarter final where the meet Abbeyside in Fraher Field on Sat 25th August at 7pm.

Tallow: S O Sullivan, J Beecher, D O Brien, K Kearney, M O Brien (1-0), R Geary, R Beecher, T Ryan (1-12), J Henley (1-0), K Geary, I Beecher (0-2), J Neville, R Grey (0-6), E Sheehan , D Buckley (0-1), D Mulcahy, M Tobin, B McCarthy, T Daly(0-1), M Stewart, E McGrath, Bob McCarthy, J Murray, E Condon, P O Brien.

A Busy Week Off The Pitch
It was a busy week for local soccer fans with trips to The Aviva and the R.S.C. The group of Arsenal supporters enjoyed their trip to the Aviva and we also met up with the father and son dressed up in the Arsenal colours. The bus driver even became an Arsenal fan but just for the photo. We failed to see any of the local Chelsea fans. Then again there is only two of them.
Friday night saw some local and some from up the country at the R.S.C. I understand some of them were on the telly. Not a good result here for the blues.
It was back to the Aviva again on Saturday where Liverpool took on SSC Napoli. To see the stadium filled with almost all Liverpool fans was strange. I counted 7 Napoli fans in our area. Here again a huge number of fans from Tallow all in good form. We had over 100,000 fans at the three soccerr matches with 97,500 at the games in the Aviva. Which shows pulling power of the Premier League clubs. We also know that thousands of fans travel to England every week for games and this will begin next weekend.
While the crowd in the R.S.C. was almost 3,300 if some of those other fans attended the SSE Airtricity League games now and again it would surely add big numbers to the gates.

 Western Semi-Final

Tallow 0-8    Fourmilewater 2-10

When these sides met in the preliminary rounds back at the beginning of April, Tallow emerged winners by 4 points. The tables were turned on this occasion however and a powerful second half performance by FMW secured a comfortable win and a place for them in the Western Final.  The first half was a tame affair with little between the teams. Fourmilewater led by 5 points to 4 at the break and there’s not much more you could say about it. Tallow’s points came from a lively Ben Aherne, James Murray, Rob O Sullivan and Kevin Henley.

Rob O Sullivan levelled the game as the second half got underway but Fourmile dominated play from there on.  Two goals in quick succession left Tallow struggling to keep pace with a reinvigorated Fourmile side. We had further points from Eoin Condon and a brace from the youthful William Murphy but the damage was done. We badly needed a goal to get back in contention but it never looked like happening despite the best efforts of James Murray, Kieran Fraser, Kevin Henley, Eoin McGrath, Jack Tobin and my man of the match Stephen Pratt.

Overall it was a decent campaign from our lads with 3 wins out of 4 in the qualifiers and the selectors would have been happy with the turnout for each game. Our thanks to the management team: Terence McSweeney, Colin Cunningham, Stuart Barry and the panel of players for their efforts. Our best wishes to JP who was withdrawn due to injury. He has been a great servant to the club and plenty more to come.

Tallow Panel: JP Grey, Stephen Pratt, Jack Tobin, Eric Hickey, Noel Condon, James Murray, Tom McGrath, Kieran Fraser, Kevin Henley, Robert O Sullivan, Eoin Condon(capt), Eoin McGrath, Martin Murphy, Ben Aherne, Joey Power, Sean Slattery, David Beecher, Sean Curley, Alan Buckley, Billy Buckley, Billy Henley, Conor McCarthy, William Murphy.

Feeding the Summer Camp

It's not an easy job feeding seventy boys and girls but Centra led by Timmy Keniry with plenty of help from Sarah and Teresa did just that on Thursday last. Our thanks to The Keniry family and Centra for their hospitality.

The Camp itself was a great success and was enjoyed by boys and girls alike. The weather helped as it was not too hot but the suncream was used. The camp is run to help the club raise funds.

All funds raised will be used for field development as a second pitch is very badly needed, to do this will cost around €6000.

Going Forward

The Club hopes to have some players involved in Development squads. The squads this season are U15, U14, U13, U12 and U11. Hopefully we will have players on all squads.

Speedy Recovery

To Alan Curley who is out of hospital and being well looked after by his father who is on holidays. Thank God as the walkers were getting tired of walking Shadow, Ha! Ha!

Academy Day

This takes place in Conna on Saturday morning next. The games begin at 10.30am. First into action will be U7 and U9 followed by u10 and U11. Players will be nitified regarding times.

Senior Hurling
Tallow 2-13 Dungarvan 3-20

Our senior hurlers had their first championship outing of 2018 on Saturday last when they took on Dungarvan in Cappoquin. Underfoot conditions played a major part in the pace of this game from the outset but both teams handled it as well as possible. Dungarvan opened the game with a point from play to which Darragh Mulcahy replied with one of his own. Dungarvan put over three more in quick succession but Tallow were given a glimmer of hope when Thomas Daly rattled the Dungarvan net with a marvellous ground strike. However, this didn’t last long and Dungarvan responded with a goal of their own to put them four ahead. Thomas Ryan cut through the Dungarvan defence minutes later and fired it low to the bottom of the net to give Tallow their second goal of the game. Again, Dungarvan got one back almost immediately to put an end to any hopes of Tallow going in to half time in front. Tallow went in at half time trailing by six and they had it all to do in the second half. Both teams traded scores at the beginning of the second half, Dungarvan’s from play and Tallow’s from a pointed free. Tallow closed the gap to five points mid way through the second half with scores from Jordan Henley, Ian Beecher and Ryan Grey and they had a chance to bring it to four but this went astray. After this Dungarvan pulled away comfortably and ran out winners on a scoreline of 3-20 to 2-13. A disappointing result, but there were some positives to be taken from the game. The persistence and work rate from start to finish was admirable. They will hope to build on last weekend’s performance when they take on De La Salle this Sunday, April 8th, in Fraher Field at 2pm. We wish they the best of luck!

Scorers for Tallow: R Grey 0-8 (7fs) T Ryan 1-2 T Daly 1-0 D Mulcahy, I Beecher, J Henley 0-1 each

Junior Hurling
Tallow 1-12 Fourmilewater 0-11

Our Junior hurling team started the year with an impressive win in difficult conditions for both teams in Aglish last Sunday. In front of a strong group of Tallow supporters we raced into an early 3pt lead with points from Noel Condon, Kevin Henley and a Billy Henley free. Thomas McGrath got the score of the game running up the left wing to score from distance to extend our lead to 4pts. In fact we lead 0-9 to 0-1 at one stage with further points from Kevin Henley, Thomas McGrath, Martin Murphy and young Eoin McGrath. Fourmilewater rallied and half time saw Tallow lead 0-9 to 0-4. With the wind picking up we found ourselves under strong pressure and eventually Fourmilewater tied the game at 0-9 each. Two pointed frees from James Murray and Kevin Henley kept us in contention before Conor McCarthy goaled to provide some breathing space before Kevin Henley provided the last score from a free.

A good team performance saw us gain the victory and everyone played their part. A clean sheet for our injured captain Eoin Condon in goals was well earned. While our experienced half back line showed class is permanent, David Beecher at corner back stood out in the second half. Kieran Fraser and Thomas McGrath controlled the midfield battle and up front Kevin Henley was once again our talisman with a final tally of 5pts. Ably assisted by Noel Condon and young Eoin McGrath.

Team: Eoin Condon (C), David Beecher, Jack Tobin, Eric Hickey, Will McDonnell, James Murray (0-1f), Kenneth Kearney, Kieran Fraser, Thomas McGrath (0-2), Billy Henley (0-1 f) Noel Condon (0-1), Kevin Henley (0-5,2f), Eoin McGrath (0-1), Martin Murphy (0-1), Alan Buckley. Subs used: Conor McCarthy (1-0), Joey Power, Ben Aherne, Stephen Pratt

Plenty of Football - On T.V.
Yes plenty of snow and no shortage of football but the football was on the T.V. All local football fell foul to the terrible weather that we had over the last few days. However we here in Tallow can count ourselves very lucky as we did not get the worst of the weather.

Michael is Forty
Yes a big party was held for Michael Delaney (Mr Football) on Friday night last as he celebrated his 40th birthday. Michael had a lovely meal in the new take away in New St. Michael then got a shock when he thought he was just going for a few pints but the party was on in Clancys and yes it was a complete surprise. Sorry i couldn't make it Michael but sure it was a terrific night or so I am told.

O'Rourke Family U17 League
Cup Presentation to Brideview
Captain of Brideview U17 team Ben Aherne was presented with the winning trophy on Saturday evening last much to the delight of players and supporters alike. It's been a long season mainly due to the terrible weather. Its finished now and United are league champions. You will see from the match report that we lost our final game but we had the league won at that stage. Lets hope for the same result in the U18 Fraser Cup.

Results: O'Rourke Family U17 League
Brideview Utd 4, Valley Rangers 5

What a game we had here in this our final league game of the season. We were unbeaten up to now but short some of our regular players for this one it came as no surprise that we suffered our first defeat. We took the lead in the 3rd min when Chambers corner was flicked on by Beecher and captain Aherne was there to shoot home. It was a short lived advantage as Rangers were back level in the 7th min. Again Utd went back in front when Lenenhan shot home to restore Utd's one goal lead. Rangers once again were level at 2-2 after 20 min and both sides went in level at the break.
The second half was like the first with goals comming fast. Utd again went in front in the 47th min when Lenehan struck his second of the game. Tom Dalton twice denied Rangers as they pressed forward for an equaliser. It arrived in the 63rd min. It was now 3-3. Once again Utd went in front in the 70th min when Hynes was brought down in the box and Beecher stepped up and shot home. It was now 4-3 to Utd. Could we yet have more goals. Yes we could. Once again Rangers struck to bring the sides level for the fourth time. Then with just a few minutes left Rangers struck the winner to deny Utd going through the league unbeaten. We were short Eoin McGrath, Kieran Crawford and Josh Sheehan in Saturday last.

Utd's Panel: T.Dalton, E.Lenehan, W.Cunningham C.Hurley, J.Chambers, J.Almeida, D.Beecher, P.Hynes,B.Aherne, E.Scotton, M.Dalton.

Presentation
The presentation of medals will take place at a later date.

Cup Presentation
The O'Rourke family (sponsors) and Noel Hegarty Chairman of the W.W.E.C. Junior league presented the trophy to Utd's Captain Ben Aherne whose speech was short and sweet. Right Ben.

Round Tower Hotel Ardmore U12 Premier Division.

Unlucky United
Brideview Utd 0 Kilworth Celtic 1
A terrific game here between two sides with little between them. The first half saw both defences on top and anything that beat them saw the keepers in top form. The sides were scoreless at the break. A mistake in Utds defence in the very 1st minute of the second half saw Celtic score the only goal of a terrific game. Well done to our lads who tried very hard to get back on level terms.

Utd's Squad all used: A.Good, T.Twohig, H.H.Lee, J.Morrisson, B. Murphy, G.Hynes, J.McDonnell, D.Power, A. Murphy, L.Tobin, B.Miguel, B.Grey, S.Murphy, K. Gniazbo.

Unlucky
Dungarvan drew a big crowd for their F.A.I Junior Cup game against Pike Rovers sadly for the Blues the result went against them going down 3-1. The third goal came with just 2 minutes remaining. Upto this it was anyones game.

Good Weather for the Races
The weather for once was kind to the race committee for the Point-to-point races which takes place at Shanakill Cross outside Conna. A good day was had by all as well as a good night in The Corner House Bar.

Fundraising
Both the schoolboy and junior clubs will be comming together with some fundraising ideas for the next few months. The club has a good deal of work to be done to get car park, lights and a second pitch up and running and i could go on. However these ideas will be revealed shortly which should be a bit of fun as well.

Fixtures for Saturday 10th February 2018

Brideview Utd AFC Schoolboy/girl Notes

Congratulations Bobby
A great friend fo Brideview Utd namely Bobby Mc Carthy received a reward on Saturday night that was well deserved. Bobby was awarded a lifetime achivement award from the Irish Thoroughbred Breeders Association. Bobby whose stud farm The Beeches Stud is just outside Tallow is very well known in racing circles. Bobby gives his fields to ourselves and The West Waterford Hunt club for car parks on the horse fair day. A man who would do anything for the town to help it progress. Bobby is still an active man in the stud farm and his son Robert is following in his father's footsteps. To Bobby, his wife Angela and family we say once again congratulations.

The Same Old Story
Yes once again it was the same old story on Saturday night with the weather again winning out and just two games taking place and one game on Sunday afternoon last. We were not involved as both our U13's and U16's both fell foul to the weather.

Fixtures for Saturday next 3rd February 2018

There have been a number of developments over the winter months. The gym has been set up and kitted out and is currently in use by the players. This is essential if we are to progress further in the coming years and I have no doubt they will reap the benefits of the new facility. The tractor shed is also in place so going forward all is looking positive.

Santa On His Way
We had a free weekend due to the fact we had many of our managers going to the refrees course in C.I.T. Cork. So hopefully it will be all go from here on especially with plenty of action now back on the pitches. Oh! Santa is on his way.

Development Squad
Many of our players are on development squads and we hope to have a full list on next weeks notes.

In C.I.T
We had Clive Good, Brian Donnelly and Diarmuíd Costello at the refrees course on Saturday last and all three passed with flying colours.

The Wags
Two of the wags celebrated their birthdays on Saturday last namely Jackie Sheehan and Linda Casey.  We hope the girls and their party friends had a great night.

Well Done
Yes another great win for a local business namely Kearney Caterig who won caterer of the year award for the south. They will now be going for a hat trick next year. Congradulations to everyone involved.

Hugh Numbers Watch Qualifier
While we were disappointed with the result of The Republic of Ireland V Denmark it was like being in Tallow before the game in The Ballsbridge Hotel. So many local fans gathered there for the pint, food and the craic. RTE's coverage of the game drew record crowds. Over 1.7 million people watched some part of the game while the RTE player served over 135,500 live streams for the game. It was the biggest live event of 2017 to date.

Santa On His Way
Yes once again the club will bring Santa to The Community Centre this year. The date is Friday 1st December. Now I wonder is Mrs Clause be comming. Its always a good night with the parcels once again just €5. You can also buy a cup of tea or coffee on the night.

Saturday Academy
With many things happening off the field over the last few weeds our academy suffered especially the younger boys and girls. However we will be back to normal within the next two weeks.

Congratulations
We send best wishes to Kearney Catering who won Caterer of the year awar for the South. Well done to Bernie, Mick and all the staff.

A Hat trick for McGrath

Eoin McGrath scored a hat trick for Utd. in thier local derby game against neighbours Lismore.  as we rise from the bed today we are still living the dream of going to Russia.

this comming weekend will see some locals heading to Cork to do the referees course, which should solve some of the leagues problems.
Many locals lucky enough to have tickets will have mad the trip to the Aviva last night.  Lets hope we got the right result.

O Rourke Family U17 league
Lismore 2 - Brideview Utd. 6
On a day more suitable to be at home by the fire the fans who did turn up saw plenty of goals to help take ther minds off the weather.
The homesick got off to a flying start with agoal inside tow minutes. Tom Dalton saved well in the 12th minute.  Utd. were back on level terms soon afterwards when lenehan set up Dalton (Mark) to equalise.  Lismore were back in front after 27 minutes but McGrath brought the teams level when he scored the first of his hat trick. At the break the sides were level at 2-2.
Utd. got off to a flying start in the second half and McGrath was on target early in the first half to put Utd in front for the first time.
This goal seemed to have an effect on Lismore lads and Utd. added number fouir in the 67th minute when Beecher found Dalton on the righ wing with a terrific pass.  The latter found McGrath and he made no mistake from close range.

Dalton himself added number five before Almedia who had only just come on grab the final goal of this game.
in between goals Tom Dalton denied Lismore when he saved a penalty kick.  this win keeps Utd. on top of the league table but its early days yet.
Utd: T Dalton, W. Cunningham, D. Beecher, J. Neville, C. Henley, E. Lenehan, K.Crawford, B, Aher, G. Sheehan, E. McGrath, M. Dalton, J. Almeida.

Mixed results for United

It was a dayof mixed results for Utd. our U12's went down at home to Clashmore Ramblers while our U14's had a good win against Ardmore.  You better watch out as Sana is coming to town.  Due so school finals Utd. have just an U17 game this coming Saturday away to neighbours Lismore.

Results: Round Tower Hotel Ardmore U12 Premier League.  Brideview Utd. O Clashmore Ramblers 4.

A strong Ramblers side got the better of Utd. side who had a full squad for this game.  Ramblers led 2-0 at the break.  OUr lads tried hard to get back in the game with McDonnell, Henley, Maguil, and Murphy all going close to finding the net. Late in the game the visitors added two more goals to run out convincing winners.  Our lads tried hard and can feel proud of their display against a very good Ramblers side.

Utds squad all played: Alex Good, Harvey Hagan Lee Joe Morrissey, Joseph McDonnell, Aidan Murphy, Steven Murphy, Taylor Twohig, Conor Henley, Ben Grey, Brian Maguil, Luka Tobin, Kuba Borek.

Dungarvan Shopping Centre U14 Premier League.

Bridview Utd. 5 Ardmoe 1

A good win here for United against another West Waterford side Ardmore.  Utd. let 3-1 at the break thanks to goals from Jake O'Brien, Alex O'Dowd, and Josh Good.
