Senior Hurling Championship:

Tallow   1-17       Ballygunner 2- 19

This was a decent performance from our lads. They worked hard, played some quality hurling and were perhaps unlucky not to get something out of the game.  These lads can be proud of their efforts but they need to double up on it. . No big secret about Kilkenny. It’s assumed you can hurl. After that Cody picks the lads who will fight in the trenches.

We had lapses at the start of both halves which cost us dearly.  Ballygunner shot into a 5 point lead in the opening 7 minutes and coincidentally that was their winning margin at end of play. After a jittery start, our full back line got the grips with things and performed well as a unit. Jake Beecher in particular was both competent and confident on the ball. After that opening salvo by Ballygunner there was little between the sides! Indeed for most of the second half Tallow looked the better hurling side. I didn’t take any notes at the game so in a manner of speaking much of this report is ad lib. Great to see Paul O Brien back hurling and hurling well!  (Fada is not writing these notes by the way) Darrah Buckley is a much improved player and he has more to offer.

That said it’s what’s on the scoreboard that counts and Ballygunner are safely into the quarter finals and remain firm favourites to regain the county title.

Tallow: Shaun O Sullivan, Jake Beecher, David O'Brien, Mark O Brien, K Geary, Jordan Henley,  Rob Beecher, Robbie Geary, Ian Beecher(0-2) ,  Thomas Ryan (1-4)  Ryan Grey

(0-1) Bob McCarthy (O-1), Paul O Brien (0-1), Ken Kearney, Darrah Buckley (0-7,4f) Subs  Tommy Daly (0-1), Rob O Sullivan, Mikey Tobin

We face Passage next, probably on the week end 24/25 August. There’s not a poc of a ball between most of the senior teams in the county. It won’t be easy. Trench warfare!!

Overall this was a competitive sporting championship encounter and Ballygunner were worthy winners. There were a few aspects of the game which troubled me however. This is no sour grapes as I would have said the same had we won by 10 points. Cards were dispensed liberally, most of them with a Tallow address. Tallow mentors were admonished (one sent to the stand) apparently for pitch encroachment while I counted no less than 6 of the opposition management/backroom team on the field on one occasion. As the saying goes all we ask for is parity of esteem. Above all Tallow do not ask for but demand respect for our players. A number of our players were at the receiving end of personal insults and abusive foul language from the referee. I’m well aware of what I’m saying here and have double checked my facts. Stuff like frees, cards etc. can be subjective. This was outrageous. The GAA to their credit have made an issue out of respect for referees. . It cuts both ways. We have a duty to our players and will raise this issue on whatever forum necessary for as long as it takes.
